5 reasons your social media marketing isn’t working

We get it, social media can often feel like a moving target. One day your posts are thriving, the next, they’re ghosted. If your brand’s social media marketing isn’t delivering the engagement, leads, or sales you expected, you’re not alone!

Let’s break down the top reasons why things might not be clicking (yet) and, more importantly, how to fix them.

1. the algorithm is not your friend

Social media platforms are shifting gears constantly, prioritising content that keeps users hooked. Organic reach is declining, and even your most loyal followers might not be seeing your content.

How to fix it: Play the game. Lean into high-retention formats like Reels, Stories, and interactive posts (think IG lives, polls and Q&As). Keep an eye on platform updates, test different content types, and encourage real conversations in your comments and dms.

2. engagement looks a little different now

Likes and comments aren’t the be-all and end-all. More people are engaging privately sharing posts via DMs, saving them for later, or lurking without double-tapping (guilty!).

How to fix it: Track what really matters. Look beyond vanity metrics and focus on saves, shares, direct messages, and actual conversions. Use tracking and social listening tools to understand how your content is really performing.

3. your content feels ‘too corporate’.

Today’s audiences crave authenticity. Overly polished, ‘salesy’ content is getting scrolled past. People want to see behind the scenes, real faces, and unfiltered moments.

How to fix it: Showcase real people as much as possible! This includes customers, employees and creators. Lean into user-generated content (UGC), testimonials, and collaborations with influencers who align best with your brand values.

4. it’s a ‘pay to play’ world.

Organic reach alone won’t cut it anymore. Social media platforms reward brands that invest in advertising, and a solid paid strategy can amplify your organic efforts.

How to fix it: Mix organic and paid. Use ads to boost your best-performing posts, retarget website visitors, and nurture leads. Even a small, well-targeted ad budget can go a long way.

5. you’re not measuring what actually matters.

If your only success metric is follower count, you’re missing the bigger picture. Without tracking actual business impact, it’s impossible to know what’s working.

How to fix it: Dive deeper into website traffic, lead generation, and conversions by utilising various tracking tools to measure ROI and optimise performance based on real data.
